Khulan grew up helping her father train captive golden eagles to hunt. The middle child of five girls, she was keenly aware of her father's longing for a son, and did her best to behave like a boy to please him.  

Spending most of her time in the wilds with the big birds of prey, did not help her social skills any.  Neither did her stubborn refusal to follow the ancient tradition of using tethered coyotes and foxes to train her eagle to kill.   This "girlish weakness" earned her quite a bit of ridicule, even though her falconry skills are good.  As a result she has developed a dislike of people bordering on phobia, and has few friends. While she is not the only girl to hunt eagles, Khulan is still considered odd because she prefers to avoid other people when in the village.
