Another page of my Illustration Methods sketchbook, this time from the "Open Subject" section.
I've been working on and off on a story that I've had since high school that I really really want to pick up again and possibly turn into a series of books. I've been keeping a word document with all the terms, names of races, types of magics, etc. on it for the last six months. Its starting to pile up and its getting out of hand in regards to the sheer amount of stuff that goes into this storyline. However, there came the problem of "Oh crap, I haven't drawn the races. Go me." So I figured the open subject part of the sketchbook would be a good place to start some concepts.

The first concepts I ended up with were for the serpent race called the N'gai who are closely related the Neva-Bourjax and N'maj (I've got oooooooold sketches of the Nevas but they're not posted much of anywhere). The look I was going for was a very snake-like, reptilian face that still had readable human features. Of course, best reference ever is my baby, Rico. So much to his chagrin I pulled him out of his tank and loved on his little black and red self so I could look at his face. God I love that snake~ = u =

Anyway, after getting a good look at the way his scales meshed around his mouth and eyes, and even on his underbelly, I ended up with these preliminary sketches. Very much like a snake in appearance and still humanish. :D

The N'gai
A race of humanoid snake beings living in hidden cities throughout the world of Garean. It is thought that both the N'gai and the N'maj were once one species and at some point in history branched and evolved into what they are today. While the N'maj enjoy life among humans in their cities and airships, N'gai prefer to live in their hidden homes away from humans and their "tainted magic". The N'gai culture is heavily influenced and governed by white magics and it is said that their art of white magic is by far the strongest and most difficult to learn.

So there you have it, the beginning concepts of the N'gai~ I seriously want to start writing this book. D:
